Admission
Las Virgenes Unified School District is pleased to offer GATE, Gifted and Talented Education, as an option for students who qualify. Currently offered at A.E. Wright Middle School in Calabasas, the program is designed to meet the needs of those young people who have a high intellectual giftedness. These students often find themselves in classrooms where they are bored and not challenged. Our GATE program includes a classroom setting that is enriched with depth and novelty and accelerated to enable our gifted students to make continuous progress in school.
REFERRAL PROCESS FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL GIFTED SELF-CONTAINED CLASSROOMS
BELOW ARE THE STEPS THAT MUST BE COMPLETED FOR APPLICATION TO THE SELF-CONTAINED GIFTED CLASSROOM AT A. E. WRIGHT MIDDLE SCHOOL
Note: Students transferring into the district will also need to complete an IQ test. Prior status as "gifted" will not automatically qualify these students for the self-contained gifted program. Tests can be scheduled through the District Office after completing the Parent GATE application form.
IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL MATRICULATION & ENROLLMENT IN GATE AT AE WRIGHT
If a student's current 5th grade school placement matriculates to AC Stelle or Lindero Canyon, instead of AE Wright, it is mandatory to complete and submit a School of Choice Permit within the permit window in order for a transfer to be approved and for the student to participate in the GATE Program. This permit request is not binding and can be accepted or voided at a later date, should the student not qualify for the program, or it is decided GATE would not be a good fit/student prefers to continue to their prior school placement.
For questions regarding School of Choice Permit or Interdistrict Permit requirements, please email: Ali Lloyd at alloyd@lvusd.org.

- Referral for admission to the self-contained gifted program is made by parents after they've reviewed the "Characteristics of Gifted Students - Self-Screening" form. The self-screening process asks parents to carefully consider the appropriateness of the program for their child based on the characteristics of gifted students as identified by the California Association for the Gifted (CAG).
- Parents who are interested in the GATE program, based on the CAG criteria, will also need to register for the district-administered IQ test.
How to sign up for testing?
If you are interested in having your student assessed for the GATE Program for enrollment in the current school year, please fill out our GATE testing request form. After completing the online testing request form, currently enrolled LVUSD 5th grade students will be tested at their home school sites during the first semester of 2024. All other students will be contacted after the new year to sign up to be tested at our District offices.
