For all newcomers and first-timers to Wright, L.A.S.S. is the language arts/social studies block into which all sixth graders are programmed. Students have the same teacher, in succession, for both subjects. This block provides students a nice transition from elementary school to middle school, and it is also is a natural combination of subject matters.
The language arts curriculum includes the reading of several short stories and novels. The writing focuses on personal narratives as well as responses to literature. Within the context of the reading and writing, grammar and punctuation will be emphasized. New this year from the language arts department is our very own middle school stylebook. We encourage all students and parents to download the AEW Stylebook and see all the information that it includes. It is a resource that was put together by members of all departments here at A.E. Wright. It provides writing tips, notetaking lessons, and more proficient ways of tackling homework. It is the first of its kind among the LVUSD middle schools, and we know that it will be invaluable to you.
The social studies curriculum will be brand new to students in sixth grade. The focus is on the contributions of the ancient world, and we will be exploring Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Mesoamerica, as well as Greece and Rome. Also, because of our block schedule, we will be taking advantage of the opportunity to write across the curriculum whenever possible.
